AP Language and Composition
Assignment:
Thank You for Arguing by Jay Heinrichs
What makes an argument work? When analyzing rhetoric, what can you look for throughout texts? Jay Heinrichs’s book provides you with insights into the art of persuasive written or oral language (rhetoric) by building a foundation of classical rhetoric but then also linking it to the tricks of the great speakers of history as well as to pop culture. When we return to school, we will examine exemplary writings, figure out what makes them tick, and learn to use these tricks of the trade in your own writing.
1. Read chapters 1-17 (We will finish the rest of the book throughout the school year). 2. Take brief notes on each chapter. Keep notes organized by chapter. 3. Write a one page reflection on what you found useful.
Due Date: First day of school
I look forward to working with you in the 2022-2023 school year. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
